Career
He began his career as a Pioneer senior in high school. He worked as secretary of the Komsomol Committee and head of the department of educational management. He was also a pro-rector for educational and social work of the Belarusian State Pedagogical University.
From 2004 to 2012 he was deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus of the third and fourth convocations. He headed the Commission for International Affairs and CIS Relations of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus.
In 2011-2016 he was the deputy chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee.
He has been a Member of the Communist Party since 1984, and took part in the revival of the Communist Party of Belarus. He was second secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus and first secretary of the Minsk City Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus.
In October 2012, he was elected first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus.
